Discover Bordeaux and its unmissable vineyards
Just a 1-hour car drive from our hotel in Arcachon, Bordeaux has much to offer to visitors who enjoy fine architecture, the French art of living and gastronomy. The city is now also just 2 hours and 4 minutes from Paris on the new high-speed train line. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, it has a lovely climate, magnificent architecture, many pedestrian streets and delightful squares dotted with cafe and restaurant terraces. Here are just some of the things to see: Bordeaux’s old town, which looks like it has come straight out of a film, between Cours de l’Intendance and Rue Peyronnet (Porte Cailhau, Place de la Bourse, the spire of Saint-Michel, Sainte-Croix Church), the Water Mirror, the Grands Hommes Quinconces district, the “pont de pierre” bridge spanning the River Garonne, the Cité du Vin (a unique venue for culture and recreation where wine comes to life through an immersive, sensorial approach, all set within an evocative architectural design).
It goes without saying that Bordeaux is also an excellent place from which to discover the vineyards, chateaux and wine-making villages in the surrounding area. Within a 60 km radius, there are three major wine producing regions: the Gironde estuary with its Medoc and Blaye wines, the Garonne with its Sauterne and Graves wines on the left bank and Côtes du Bordeaux on the right, and the right bank of the Dordogne with its Libournais wines.
The unmissable Bordeaux wine estates include Château d’Yquem (Sauternes), Château Mouton-Rothschild (Pauillac), Château Cheval Blanc (Saint-Emilion), Château Ausone (Saint-Emilion), Château Latour (Pauillac), Château Haut-Brion (Graves), Château Margaux (Medoc)…
